We certainly don’t do it all, but we do as much as we can to provide the freshest food possible for our family, and it’s rewarding in more ways than one. Thankful, grateful and proud of our hard work as the garden season winds down and butchering season picks up! If you are wanting to learn how to grow, preserve or butcher your own food follow along with my family as we enjoy the seasons of growth and preservation! . . . #gardening #canning #homestead #farmwife #farmlife

This particular class of herbicides, called aminopyralids, is sprayed on hay fields to kill weeds. It lasts on the hay and can stay in manure or compost for YEARS. The bad news? If you leave the hay or compost in a pile, it takes FOREVER for the residue to break down. The good news? Once it’s spread into soil, microbes will (usually) break it down within 1-2 years. I realize this may be one of the most controversial statements I’ve ever made. 😂 But y’all. Seriously. Every time I get online I see people blaming their small harvest, pest problems, blossom end rot, too much rain, or too little rain on the government. Wins and losses are a normal part of gardening. It’s always been like that. Some years we have a bumper crop of pumpkins, some years we don’t. Some times pests are especially bad, other times, they are mild. This year we’ve had beautiful rains a

But all is not lost. The revival of interest I’m seeing in kitchen skills gives me so much hope. Perhaps we needed the pendulum to swing to the processed extreme so we would finally be inspired to return to our culinary roots. “Where do I start?!” you ask? Simmer a pot of broth. Cook dry beans instead of buying canned. Make biscuits instead of popping them out of a tube. Roast a chicken. Boil potatoes and mash them instead of reconstituting flakes.
